Over life-size head which turns to its right. The eyes are deeply set and half-closed, the forehead knotted. Mouth is slightly open. The surface of the bronze is roughly worked. De Weissant was one of the six Burghers of Calais who sacrificed themselves in 1347 to Edward III in order to save their city. The piece is a preliminary ""sketch."" The Museum owns a plaster cast.
