Lord Mansfield

1911 / Karl T.F. Bitter / Cleveland

Lord John Somers (Lord Mansfield).JPG

Life-size portrait of Lord Mansfield in long robes, buckle shoes, jurist's long wig & long decorative chain. His hands are positioned in a way that he might be orating, as he was so well known for doing.

Lord Mansfield was an excellent politician and Judge. His tenure as Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench saw radical reforms in the law, ranging from Mercantile to Common to Copyright. He caught England up, legally speaking, with the rest of Europe and was a proponent of not blindly following precedent, but interpreting laws based on the contemporary social/political context of the case. His figure above the Courthouse is a reminder of his commitment to Justice in all respects.
