Century Rock1.jpg

Century Rock is an Alignment sculpture created to be experienced as a sensation activator. The 6 ton glacial boulder is cut into two equal hemispheres & opened just enough to pass through. In contrast to the concrete surface of the Buchtel Common, a rubber pathway introduces a buoyant sensation. Walking between the rock division, the polished surfaces provide physical as well as mental engagement. We are like this, symmetrically divided and must "fill" the division, by activating our nervous system & filling the void in our awareness - takes "sensation" being present in the moment of time.

Surrounding the site is Ohio barley and grass that represents the free-breathing country landscapes that surround Akron, while the tire path, which terminates at the glacial bottom of the boulder, emphasizes the importance of the tire industry on the development of the area.
