Nkondi Invocation Figure

Date Unknown / Andrew F. Scott / Columbus

Two Face 1.png

A metal sculpture of a two-faced figure embedded evenly with nails. The figure represents a Nkisi Nkondi (also known as a power figure, or fetish figure), a type of sculpture seen from the Kongo people of Africa. The figure holds a reflective box near its abdominal region. The reflective material represents the 'other world' and acts as a storage unit for medical substances. The nails driven through the figure are believed to activate the figure and allow the search of wrongdoings, cure of illness, and enforce oaths.

This figure is one of eight in the ' Invocation Figures' by Andrew. F Scott, an African American metal sculptor from Brooklyn, New York. This series of sculpture is described as"Traditional African forms that are used to invoke power are abstracted and brought into a modern using modern materials, transformations in scale through fabrication in steel" ( Scott ).
