William Stinchcomb Memorial

1958 / William M. McVey / Rocky RIver

00144 old.jpg

Concave cinder block monolith. The base and the capital of the structure are both constructed from a muted brown/gray stone, but the main part is a stark white. On the right side of the monument, there hangs a granite rondel incised with Stinchcomb's portrait.

William Stinchcomb is considered the father of the Cleveland Metroparks. He was put in charge of developing the parks as the director, and his decisions were rife with foresight and wisdom. His choices were guided by "the bigger picture" which he never lost sight of, leading to the wonderfully preserved and active Metroparks system in Cleveland. The sculpture was raised on a hilltop overlooking the horseshoe-shaped valley where Stinchcomb had purchased the first parcel of land for the "Emerald Necklace" in 1919.
