The Bingham Red Tree

Date Unknown / Creator Unknown / Cleveland

CWRU 2017e.jpg

A series of red painted steel beams. It looks to be made from scrap and found metal that was cleaned, painted, and arranged into a tree-like form. The sculpture is entirely unmarked and lives out in the back of the Bingham building, where one can find the student wood and metal shops.

Each piece is fastened to the others chiefly with nuts and bolts, with a few instances of pressing. The edges are crisp and straight, a mark of engineering and skill, and the pieces used vary in shape, size, and thickness. The "cobbled-together" feeling that comes from the hodge podge of pieces, juxtaposed against the deliberate nature of their technical construction give this piece a unique "Natural-Industrial" look.
