May 26th, 1887 / Alexander Doyle / Toledo

steedman.jpg

A strong example of late 19th Century bronze castinf that commemorates Toledo' Civil War hero. Shown in battle regalia with saber at his side and binoculars at the ready. This stately sculpture is installed on a 20ft granite base.

It is the oldest work in the City of Toledo’s public art collection. Originally located where St. Clair and Summit Streets once met, the monument was moved to then Riverside Park and re-dedicated on July 4th, 1920. In 1979, a car hit the granite pedestal and toppled the bronze sculpture to the ground resulting in substantial damage. The monument was repaired, moved to a safer location in the park, and again, re-dedicated in 1983.

Renovation work on the sculpture began the week of August 31st 2015 to restore and repair the original granite wrap and replace the concrete pad. The project was completed on October 23rd.
